Setting of the Month

There’s a story doing the rounds of the local press right now proclaiming Thamesmead as film setting of the month, an accolade awarded by Film Fixer. What’s interesting is that the area is getting quite firmly linked to Misfits which is filmed here, although the fictional setting of Misfits is actually named Wertham. The majority of outdoor scenes are filmed locally but the interiors are almost all elsewhere.

I used to love Misfits, but I feel that it’s gone downhill. I never warmed to Rudy and the loss of further characters makes it feel a lot less cohesive. Even before that, though, once we knew the characters there didn’t seem to be much driving force beyond monster of the week, and the way the powers are played with is far less interesting than when they appeared to be a dangerous secret that a few people had access to.

It doesn’t stop me watching, though, dipping in repeatedly to see the locations. I’m waiting for the episode I can freeze frame and proclaim “I can see my house from here!”

The Link looks awesome!

I often wish I were younger than I am, but rarely so much as this weekend when I looked around The Link. I went along with my boyfriend and we were greeted to be given a tour by Mark Blundell, the man in charge. It was a fascinating look at a really exciting looking space and I took a lot of pictures. This is just a quick “coming soon” message to act as a placeholder while I write up and add the pictures I took to the blog, but as a regular sceptic, I was definitely won over by the drive and innovation of the people putting the centre together. Watch this space!

Chemist needs a home

As reported in the local press, a local chemist is about to be kicked out of its premises and needs to find a new place to set up shop locally in the near future, else it will have to go out of business. There are some strange conditions related to the new premises, which mean it needs to find a property to occupy within half a kilometre of the current business at Tavy Bridge. The shop is being closed down along with others in the small parade at Tavy Bridge, which is part of the regeneration project known as Southmere Village. The local health centre has offered space but it is too expensive to rent.

It’s odd to watch supposed improvements to an area have such a detrimental effect. I know that when I was suffering from an ear infection at the tail end of last year, it was no fun at all to need to take the bus up to Morrison’s supermarket to collect my prescription because the chemist was shut by the time my appointment with the doctor was over. On the other hand, I’m not entirely sure why the premises just outside Abbey Wood station are unsuitable – a shop has been empty there for months since the cafe closed down. While it’s not ideal, there are other options available if this shop is closed – the supermarket houses a chemist and drug dispensary and while I’m not sure of the locations a train ride to Erith or Woolwich will almost certainly offer more options. There seems to have been a lack of forethought on the part of the owners, as I’ve been aware that they were going to have to close at the current premises for some time. I’m happy to be educated on details of why they haven’t found somewhere to move to in the meantime should there be extenuating circumstances, but overall the whole situation seems to be a badly thought through mess.

The Link has an opening date

Alerted by an email, I’ve just visited the website for The Link to discover that it finally has an official opening date as well as the “sneak peek” date mentioned in my last entry. To quote them directly:

The Link Thamesmead will be opening its doors on Monday 1 October 2012 and will offer the local community a wide range of fun and inspiring activities and opportunities, as well as spaces for hire.

I am very intrigued as to whether it’s something I’ll be able to make much use of. The fun facilities include editing suites, rope areas and a climbing wall but the emphasis is always put on “young people” with an afterthought mention of “the local community” tacked on as far as I can see. As an adult without kids I suspect my own access to the centre is likely to be relegated to the opportunity to hire rooms. I’m staying open minded, though, and hope that I get to play with the cool facilities.

It does look to be an excellent resource and I hope it does well. It should certainly quash some of the concerns about there being nothing for kids in the area.

The Link – an invitation to a sneak preview

I received a blog comment earlier, which I’m promoting to a top level post here:

I am writing from The Link Thamesmead.

We regularly read your blog and know you have taken an interest in The Link. We would like to invite you and all your readers, along to Open House, an event that is organised by Open-City that gives anyone and everyone from architectures to members of the general public ‘the chance to explore hundreds of inspiring buildings in London for free’.

Tours will be taking place at 10am, 11am and 12pm on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September 2012, and we would very much like your company and give you the chance to explore the new, state-of-the-art community hub that is going to offer so much to so many, and answer any questions you may have.

Reservations do not need to be made, you just need to turn-up! The address is: The Link Thamesmead, Belvedere Road, Thamesmead, SE2 9BS.

We look forward to seeing you there!

There was no name but the email address suggests its a J Hickson making us aware.

I’m intrigued by The Link and have been waiting patiently for it to open its doors. How much use I’ll get out of it myself, I’m unsure, as it seems to be aimed primarily at teenagers. Nonetheless, I definitely hope to be able to make it along to one of the tours to get a bit of a preview. I believe it’s due to open imminently so it’s possibly not that much of a preview, but I’ll report back if I make it there.

Insects!

It’s been a slow news month for Thamesmead, which is a good thing, since the previous big news in the area was the killing of some poor old lady who was robbed, tied up, and left to die in her house.

Passing over that, swiftly, though, the latest headlines are all about the insects. First up we have one Dave Crouchman who spotted a dangerous spider in his garage. His reluctance to park his car in there subsequently made headlines. “I am scared of spiders in general, until I held a tarantula at a wildlife park – I still don’t like them but am more tolerant now,” quotes the News Shopper website, leaving me to wonder why an arachnophone felt the urge to call the local press over a case of being disturbed by the proximity of a spider. I can’t say I’d have recognised a deadly spider from any other.

More recently, we come into contact with webs again in the headlines, this time the product of caterpillars. It seems a lot of them have congregated around some bushes near Belmarsh Prison and created a large protective web. This is unusual only in terms of its size, but again it’s seen as news-worthy, this time being reported with even less sensational quotes such as the local expert’s view on things: “The caterpillars are harmless to us, but I reckon those bushes are stuffed.” Apparantly the elderly neighbourhood is stunned and has never seen anything like it.

Local news at its raciest? Perhaps not.

Living At Thamesmead

The London Met archives have come up with a new video lauding Thamesmead from its early years. This is semi fictional as it deals with a young couple wandering around the area, but also contains a lot of footage of actual residents. It’s quite eerie to look at the buildings that have barely changed and see people in obviously dated vintage outfits wandering around it.

BIG HEARTED THAMESMEAD TOWN BID FOND FAREWELL TO HMS OCEAN

What follows is, essentially, a press release. I am horrendously behind on things I want to write up for the blog, but this is time sensitive and people want the word spread so I’m getting it out there. Despite having no interest whatsoever in football!

Sailors from the Navy’s largest ship, HMS Ocean, will be taking on Thamesmead Town FC in a charity match on Wednesday 5 September in aid of Help for Heroes.

The helicopter carrier has been moored at Greenwich as part of the huge security presence for the London Olympics but will be leaving in the next week or so.

Thamesmead spokesman Keith McMahon said: “HMS Ocean contacted us about staging the friendly and we were happy to organise it. We hope that lots of people will want to come along to basically say thank you and goodbye to the people who looked after us during the Olympics. They’ve come to us and we know we can stage it and we owe them that and hopefully the community will come out to support us.”

The match is taking place at Thamesmead Town’s Bayliss Road ground, kicking-off at 7.45. Entry is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

Thamesmead South regeneration

I’m in something of a rush right now, but this can’t go without comment!

The residents of Thamesmead are being asked for their opinions on the future of the area as plans for a bit of a refurbishment take place. There’s a roadshow happening, with three key dates, and there is a wealth of information to download concerning the proposals that warrant the discussion. I even found an online survey, although it was badly built and didn’t really work very well – for example when I came to check my age bracket, none of them included the age of 38.

Still, I’ll be taking a day to go and find out more next week, but in the meantime, let me leave you with these links:

The Link

Trust Thamesmead has been talking about The Link for some time. Originally the dates for it opening that I was seeing were late in 2011, but that’s recently changed to be touted as “Summer 2012”, having had a label of “early 2012” for a while. I am under the impression that it may finally open its doors in September 2012, as evidenced by this information, which for the first time refers directly to some of the resources that will be available.

The Link’s own site is woefully lacking in detail so far, with nothing added to the News section since a job advertisement in April.
